6. Sutton Bridge - update 6th February 2010

At a meeting with ERYC on Friday 5th Feb the following information was noted:

The bridge is planned to be opened to light traffic by Sunday 7th or Monday 8th. This is a temporary solution, pending agreement Between ERCC and the 2 parish councils on the timing of permanent repairs.

There will be a width restriction of 2.0 metres and a possible weight restriction of 3.5 tonnes. These restrictions will be enforced by signage.

A speed restriction of 10 mph will be introduced, enforced by speed bumps and the traffic lights will be rephased.

If the restrictions are ignored by heavy vehicles then residents are asked to report details of the offenders, accompanied by photographs if possible, to any councillor who will the ensure that the information is passed to ERCC for further action.

Should it be become apparent that there is wide abuse of the restrictions then ERCC will introduce physical width limiters.

During works the ERYC will try to maximize pedestrian access as far as possible it will be inevitable that when heavy machinery or other dangerous work was being carried out, pedestrian access will need to be restricted. Disruption to pedestrians will be minimised as far as possible.

The long-standing petition for a permaneant environmental weight limit on the bridge of a permanent HGV will go before the relevant ERYC committee in march. All parties (the communities of Elvington and Sutton upon Derwent, the ERYC and the City of York Council) agree that we will never have a better chance of gaining an HGV restriction than we have now and all appear to be in favour of the ban. Residents affected are urged to write to their respective councils to exert as much pressure as possible in order to effect, once and for all, a permanent ban on HGVs using the bridge.

5. Sutton Bridge Closure update 3rd February 2010

The following information has been received from the ERYC:

By way of a follow on from my email to you earlier today, we now feel that the work that remains to be done during this phase of temporary repairs to the bridge, can now be done without imposing the restrictions we applied to pedestrians last week.

However, there may be occasions when we would ask pedestrians to wait at the bridge for a short period while an operative escorts them across at times when the contractor would deem it necessary.

Work of this nature demands that we review the safest and most effective means of working on a regular basis. To this end, we are meeting a number of various parties tomorrow after which further information will become clearer. It is my intention therefore to contact you once again either tomorrow or Thursday to ensure you have the latest information that affects your community.

4. Sutton Bridge Closure update 30th January 2010

The following information has been received from the ERYC

Works are now moving forward to programme and we apologise for any inconvenience as a result of these small closures to pedestrian traffic. Should weather conditions remain we are hopeful of completing the temporary works expediently as possible.

By way of confirmation:

Friday 29 January
Closed from 10 am until 12 o'clock (to enable the schoolchildren to cross after their morning assembly).
Open at 12 'clock until 1 pm.
Closed from 1 pm until 3 pm. Thereafter it will remain open until 9.30 am on Saturday morning.

Saturday 30 January
Closed from 9.30 am until 12 o'clock.
Open at 12 o'clock until 1 pm.
Closed from 1 pm until 3 pm. Thereafter it will remain open until 9.30 am on Sunday morning.

Sunday 31 January
Closed from 9.30 am until 12 o'clock.
Open at 12 o'clock until 1 pm.
Closed from 1 pm until 3 pm. Thereafter it will remain open to pedestrians.

We will erect signs at the bridge with the open/closed times displayed tomorrow (Saturday) together with the same signs positioned at strategic points on the approaches. In the meantime the contractor will position an operative at each end of the bridge to advise pedestrians.

We are currently finalising details for the vehicular barrier that will be positioned over the bridge in the near future. This will entail a similar restriction for pedestrians in the interests of safety during its installation. When we have more details I will inform you.

3. Sutton Bridge Closure - 9th January 2010

The East Riding of Yorkshire Council has advised us that Sutton Bridge has been closed following extensive damage by vehicle impact. They are currently (12th Jan) surveying the extent of the damage and assessing the scale of repairs - which will be extensive. They tell us the bridge will be closed for some time though at the moment they are not clear on how long, though it will probably be a couple of weeks at least.

Details will be available at this web site link:

2. Developing Outdoor Activities in the East Riding

The East Riding Council, alongside several partner organisations, would like to encourage wider participation in outdoor adventurous activities - such as canoeing, surfing, sailing, climbing, hill walking, wind/kite surfing, cycling/ mountain biking, orienteering and archery.

To make these activities more accessible and affordable for everyone, funding is being sought to establish new facilities, equipment, and training opportunities within the county.

Before a funding bid can be submitted, we need as much feedback as possible to gauge the level of interest and support, and to help us plan facilities and services accordingly.

All residents (regardless of age or present involvement) are invited to complete a brief questionnaire to establish the level of existing interest and potential demand. There are just 9 short questions to complete (in ap proximately 5 minutes), and the survey can be accessed online via:

The Council's consultation website: http://www.eastriding.gov.uk/consult

1. Services for older people

The East Riding of Yorkshire Council has provided a new database of services, information, groups, social activity etc for older people (approximately 45+ (sic)) . This can be accessed at the following web site: http://www.eastriding.gov.uk/health-and-social-care/older-peoples-information/adults/
